The Kentucky Judicial Conduct Commission issued an Agreed Order of Suspension for Family Court Judge Lauren Adams Ogden of the 30th Judicial Circuit (Jefferson County). Following numerous complaints and a comprehensive review of records, the Commission found that Judge Ogden violated multiple provisions of the Code of Judicial Conduct and engaged in misconduct in office.

Key findings against Judge Ogden include:

  • Competence and Due Process Violations: Judge Ogden repeatedly failed to follow the law, provide proper notice, or ensure due process. Examples include sua sponte changing sole custody without proper procedure, issuing Domestic Violence Orders (DVOs) without sufficient findings of fact, and improperly suspending unsupervised parenting time without adequate findings of endangerment.
  • Disregard for Appellate Mandates: In April Vannatta v. Michael Vannatta, she refused to follow a Court of Appeals mandate to reinstate parenting time for six months, explicitly dismissing appellate oversight.
  • Bias and Lack of Impartiality: Throughout various proceedings, Judge Ogden demonstrated a lack of neutrality through facial expressions (such as eye-rolling, smirking, and dropping her jaw), inappropriate commentary (such as repeatedly saying "wow" or calling a defendant "hostile" and "unstable"), and ex parte style communication.
  • Inhibition of the Right to be Heard: She frequently cut off litigants, spoke over attorneys, ignored objections improperly, and muted participants on Zoom without legal justification.
  • Failures in Order and Decorum: Judge Ogden struggled to maintain courtroom control, permitted parties to speak over one another, made exasperated remarks like "I'm done" and "This is crazy," presided over a hearing with her judicial robe unzipped to reveal a shirt with a champagne glass design, and ate food and texted during proceedings.

In mitigation, Judge Ogden acknowledged the concerns, accepted responsibility, and implemented changes to protect litigants' rights, ensure proper records, and promptly execute appellate rulings.

Sanction Terms:

  • Suspension: Judge Ogden is suspended without pay for thirty consecutive days, running from midnight on November 8, 2026, through December 8, 2026. During this time, she is barred from performing duties, using court resources, or entering the Jefferson County Judicial Center.
  • Education: She must complete an approved educational course on proper hearing conduct and due process at her own expense within six months.
