Legal Knowledge: I observed a case in this courtroom and was surprised by how it was handled. The individual stated they had not heard their rights being read, yet the judge did not go over them and continued the process anyway. When the individual said they were representing themselves, the judge made a condescending remark comparing it to performing surgery on yourself and warned about jail time instead of ensuring they understood their position. The judge then entered a not guilty plea on their behalf without allowing them to fully speak. When the individual attempted to address additional charges, they were not given the opportunity to explain. Overall, the experience came across as dismissive and one-sided. A courtroom should ensure people are heard, and that did not seem to happen here. Fairness & Impartiality: Based on what I observed, the courtroom did not reflect fairness or impartiality. The individual was not given a meaningful opportunity to be heard, and concerns raised were dismissed without consideration. Judicial Temperament: The judge’s temperament did not reflect patience or professionalism. Comments made toward a self-represented individual were condescending, and there was little effort to ensure respectful communication. The overall tone felt dismissive rather than neutral. Communication: From what I observed, communication in the courtroom lacked clarity. The individual stated they had not heard their rights, yet the judge did not take time to explain or ensure understanding before proceeding. Important matters, including additional charges, were not clearly addressed or explained, leaving the process confusing and incomplete. Timeliness: The proceedings felt rushed, with important steps not being fully addressed. The individual stated they had not heard their rights, yet the process continued without pause or clarification. Speed should not come at the expense of fairness and understanding. As an observer, the overall experience raised concerns about fairness, professionalism, and clarity in the courtroom. The individual was not given a meaningful opportunity to be heard, important issues were not addressed, and the process felt rushed and dismissive. Court proceedings should reflect patience, neutrality, and clear communication—none of which were consistently demonstrated.
